β’ People with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have a greater prevalence of EDs than the general population.
β’ BPD is a personality disorder characterized by patterns of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image and affects, and marked impulsivity in a variety of contexts, including
β’ reckless driving, binge eating, substance use, or excessive spending
β’ self-injury; suicidal ideation, or suicidal behavior
β’ unstable or changing relationships
β’ fear of abandonment
β’ unstable self-image
β’ stress-related paranoia
β’ anger regulation problems
β’ consistent and constant feelings of sadness or worthlessness
Some BPD symptoms contribute to problematic eating behavior, which can develop into EDs over time.
While BPD can co-occur with any ED diagnosis, it is most prevalent among those whose ED symptoms meet criteria for BN or OSFED.
BPD and EDs share some similarities. They both:
β’ affect one’s ability to maintain healthy relationships
β’ can significantly diminish quality of life
β’ utilize maladaptive coping skills to deal with emotional dysregulation.
