While depression and anxiety are complex mental health conditions and not simply the result of not being present, there’s some truth to Lao Tzu’s famous quote.
Feelings of depression can creep in when we ruminate or dwell excessively on the past, while future-oriented thought patterns can contribute to feelings of anxiety. Mindfulness, or the practice of being fully present, is an effective way to cultivate peace, as it can help stave off and manage the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The present is PLENTY.
There’s a lot about the present we can’t control, but we control nothing in the past or future! Recovery is a one-day-at-a-time sort of journey. You’re only responsible for this moment, and this moment will only happen once. Don’t miss it. ❤️
Image: a cute blue monster with a pink heart stands in the center of a timeline. Depression is behind them, anxiety up ahead. So the monster smiles and sits in “THE PRESENT.” “This is nice!” they say to no one in particular.
